Self-Care
How well do you take care of yourself?
Reflect on what helps you rest, recover, and feel cared for—and whether you make enough space for those things in your everyday life.
Self-reflection also requires us to understand how we take care of ourselves. In a world where we are often expected to prioritise other people, our work, and countless responsibilities, self-care can become both an important necessity and a surprisingly difficult practice.
Thinking about what restores us, makes us feel better, or simply allows us to rest is therefore an important part of understanding ourselves.
Acts of self-care are deeply personal. They can also sometimes make us feel guilty.
Saying no to someone can be an act of self-care. So can enjoying a piece of cake without worrying about it. On another day, deciding not to have the cake because you are working towards a fitness goal might be an act of self-care too.
Self-care is not about following a particular set of rules.
It is about recognising what you need and allowing yourself to respond to that need without unnecessary guilt.
Busy lives can make this particularly difficult. Long working hours, daily commutes, caring responsibilities, financial worries, or months spent searching for a job can leave very little time or energy for ourselves.
Ironically, these are often exactly the periods when we need self-care most.
And self-care does not have to be elaborate.
Enjoying an ice cream.
Watching a favourite film.
Meditating or sleeping an extra hour.
Reading, writing, painting, or dancing.
Taking a walk without a destination.
Petting a puppy.
Or simply lying down and doing absolutely nothing.
Small acts can bring comfort, restore our energy, or simply make an ordinary day feel a little easier.
When we intentionally make room for these moments, their value can extend beyond the activity itself. They remind us that our needs matter too.
Perhaps the important question is not whether we are doing self-care correctly, but whether we understand what actually makes us feel cared for.
In a busy world, it is remarkably easy to forget what helps us feel rested, comfortable, joyful, or simply more like ourselves.
Reflection can help us remember.
