Identity & Masks
What does it mean to have different versions of yourself?
Explore your identity and reflect on the different versions of yourself that appear in different people, places, and moments of life.
We often think of identity as something fixed—as if there is one true version of ourselves waiting to be discovered. In reality, who we are is constantly evolving. We adapt to different people, different environments, and different stages of our lives.
The person we are at home is rarely the same person we are at work. The way we speak with close friends is different from how we greet strangers.
These changes don't necessarily mean we are pretending. More often, they reveal how different situations bring different parts of our personality to the surface.
Who are we beneath all these different roles?
Does it even make sense to search for one "true" self? Or are we simply a collection of identities that emerge throughout our lives?
Which version of you needs more care?
Which one feels the most authentic?
Which one leaves you feeling exhausted?
Around whom do you feel most like yourself?
Reflection begins when we become curious about these different parts of ourselves. Instead of asking, "Who am I?" we begin asking, "When do I become this version of myself?"
Perhaps you notice that you're more patient around one friend than another. Maybe you're quieter in some groups but more playful in others.
Rather than judging these differences, reflection encourages us to understand them. They often reveal how our relationships, environments, and experiences shape the way we show up in the world.
We are not made up of a single identity. We are a collection of different selves, each influenced by the people we meet and the experiences we carry. Self-reflection helps us recognise those patterns—not so we can judge ourselves, but so we can better understand ourselves.
Reflection questions
Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:
What part of you only appears when you feel safe?
What role are you tired of playing?
